Capernaum, in the Galilee of northern Israel is a Biblical village, located near other familiar sites in the Galilee such as Bethsaida, the Mount of Beatitudes, and Tabgha. It is situated on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee and has been coined as the “Second home of Jesus’’.
As we can surmise from the Gospel of Matthew, Capernaum was not only the second home of Jesus but also the fulfillment of prophecy:
Reading from Matthew chapter 4:12…16
12 Now when Yeshua heard that John had been handed over, He withdrew to the Galilee. 13 Leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,
15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the nations—
16 the people sitting in darkness have seen a great light,
and those sitting in the region and shadow of death,
on them a light has dawned.”
Jesus was born in Bethlehem, grew up in Nazareth and preached in Jerusalem but it was his Galilean Ministry years which he spent in Capernaum where he performed many of his miracles. Capernaum became his home and it was here he met James, John, Peter, Andrew all fishermen and Matthew a tax collector, five of his future disciples.
It was also in the Capernaum synagogue that Jesus gave the Sermon on the Bread of Life (John 6:35) . In this synagogue Jesus would regularly preach (John 6:59, Luke 4:31). Jesus expelled a demon from a possessed man here (Mark 1:21-27) and cured a Roman officer’s servant, this same centurion is thought to have built the synagogue (Luke 7:1…10). Here Jesus is also credited with raising the daughter of Jairus from the dead (Luke 8:41-56).
Archaeologists have uncovered an ancient home in Capernaum as well. This home is thought to have been the home of the Apostle Peter. Jesus cured Peter’s mother-in-law here (Matthew 8:14-15) and is thought to have lived in this house while in Capernaum. This is also the site where Jesus cured a paralytic who was lowered in through the roof (Mark 2:1-12).
